Silicone as a Substitute for Plastics?
Following up on my post on Plastics, I was wondering if anybody reading has any idea if there are dangers in using silicone kitchen items instead of plastics? All of my mixing/stirring spoons are plastic/nylon. I want to replace them. I've never liked wood spoons much (don't work well in the dishwasher, and if one is the type to soak stuff, like I do, it's not the best idea to soak wood for that long). I don't want metal since they'll damage my pots. I've been seeing silicone spoons lately and keep hearing how they're FDA recommended, yada yada, but then all I can think about is how we keep hearing that silicone breast implants have issues. So is replacing plastic/nylon utensils with silicone any better? I'm having trouble googling anything reliable on it and wondered if anybody has any thoughts on the subject?

The debate I'm most familiar with is "silicone vs saline" (I have silicone) not "silicone vs plastic." An excellent point - I don't know the answer. In breast reconstruction, the silicone is now made up of a gummy gel, not a fluid, so in event of rupture it doesn't travel through one's system like the old, thinner-walled, "runny" silicone implants.
But in the kitchen? Hmmm.
I use metal and wood and bamboo as much as possible. I do have one silicone spatula that is just perfect for scraping batter out of bowls, though. I don't know if it's better than or worse than plastic...
Glad to know they've improved on breast implants so they're less potentially damaging if they rupture.
I just posted a question about the silicone utencils on a holistic house email list I'm on - if I get any answers, I'll let you know. I'll probably buy one anyway, and then some bamboo ones that I'll have to learn to clean BEFORE I let them soak for 4 days. :)
